| Guidelines for Mentoring Inexperienced Football Official | ||||||||
| This is a guideline for the mentoring of inexperienced football | ||||||||
| officials. The intention of this guideline is not to replace our officials manual but to add clarification | ||||||||
| to it when training an official. It is also not intended to be position specific. | ||||||||
|
1) |
Mechanics: Start with the basics. Positioning. | |||||||
| a) For Free Kick- Make sure they know what a free kick is. | ||||||||
| 1) Kickoffs | ||||||||
| 2) After a safety. | ||||||||
| 3) Don't worry about the free kick after a fair catch ( or awarded fair catch ) this rarely | ||||||||
| happens and most likely will only confuse the inexperienced official. | ||||||||
| b) For Scrimmage kicks- Make sure they know what a scrimmage kick is. | ||||||||
| 1) Punts | ||||||||
| 2) Field Goals | ||||||||
| c) Pre- Snap Position. -What are you looking for. Dead Ball Fouls. Alignment of | ||||||||
| players. Players on and off the line of scrimmage. | ||||||||
| d) Positioning immediately after the snap: Once again what are you looking for. We | ||||||||
| should encourage these young officials to be zone specific in their field coverage. | ||||||||
| Discuss who it is that you read when the ball is snapped. | ||||||||
| e) Positioning near the goal: Both going in or coming out. What are you responsible | ||||||||
| for. Who signals a score ( only the official that sees the score ). | ||||||||
| f) Duties between down: Who count players and what signals are used to verify. | ||||||||
| g) Positioning for Measurement of a first down. | ||||||||
| h) Positioning and what to tell the referee when a penalty has been called. | ||||||||
| i) Position during time outs- Emphasis that all are to record, confirm and inform. | ||||||||
| j) Position between quarters: What are your duties. | ||||||||
| k) Halftime Positioning: | ||||||||
| l) Post game positioning: Leave the field immediately. If at a sub-varsity level, you can | ||||||||
| talk to your friend later but get off the field and together. | ||||||||
| It is my opinion that repetition is one of the keys to anyone doing a good job. Show the | ||||||||
| inexperienced official the proper mechanic's and positioning techniques and then let | ||||||||
| him do it over and over again until it becomes useable. | ||||||||
| 2) | Actual ball in play: | |||||||
| a) Reads of a play. | ||||||||
| b) What are you looking for. | ||||||||
| c) What penalties will most likely occur in your area of responsibilities. | ||||||||
| d) Spotting of the ball ( primarily for wing officials ). | ||||||||
| e) Out of bounds plays. Running and pass. | ||||||||
| f) Scrimmage Kicks: Where do you go pre-snap and where do you go post-snap. What | ||||||||
| are you looking for. | ||||||||
| g) Throwing the flag: The importance of it being on the proper yard line. | ||||||||
| h) Communication - With Coaches, Players and most importantly your fellow officials. | ||||||||
| 3) | Presentation, Pre-game and Post-Game: | |||||||
| a) The uniform. How is it to be worn. Set an example. Facial hair ( is he groomed | ||||||||
| properly). | ||||||||
